Reading Comprehension & Essay Writing
  • 1 hour
  • This course seeks to develop style and substance in students’ writing and their exposure to, and analysis of, quality texts. Students will be taught the best approach to exam-style reading comprehension questions, a key examinable skill in the 11+ examinations, along with different creative writing tasks designed to explore a variety of genres of writing. From our 20+ years experience, we have found that the best creative writers are also the most avid readers, and we aim to look over a different piece of text each day, aiming to inspire the young minds of our students.
  • By the end of the course, our students will have covered:
    • Interpretation and analysis of quality texts of various genres.
    • Evaluation of language use and the effect of word choice on narrative and reader.
    • Articulating answers to 11+ style reading comprehension questions.
    • Ways to approach writing different genres.

  • The focus of this course is to improve our students’ grasp of advanced vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation (SPAG). This is crucial foundational knowledge which when applied with confidence and accuracy leads to top marks in any written task. Moreover, a good understanding of SPAG is needed in achieving full comprehension of advanced texts - all of which is highly examinable in the 11+.
  • By the end of the course, we expect that students will have covered:
    • How to evaluate and learn language patterns and irregular forms.
    • The identification and correction of errors in transcription, and its application to checking their own work.
    • Writing with range and accuracy, using complex sentence structures, advanced punctuation, and sophisticated vocabulary.

Maths
  • 1 hour
  • Our approach for this course is to reinforce the core knowledge which forms the foundation of Maths exam technique. This course will encourage mathematical reasoning and build on the understanding of concepts taught in previous academic years, meaning that students are equipped with breadth and depth in their knowledge which is crucial for success in the 11+ .
  • By the end of the course, our students will have covered:
    • Revision of key examinable topics: number functions and operations, multiplication, division, area, perimeter, angles, basic algebra and many more!
    • Worded problem solving questions to gain confidence in systematic mathematical reasoning.
