Year 5 English Introduction
In Year 5, students should be able to demonstrate using a wide breadth of vocabulary which they have gained from their 11+ classes. They should also begin to write more expressively in English, using this as a chance to illustrate their creativity.
Our Year 5 English lessons, which have a specific reading title each week, emphasise students’ understanding of the language which can be used to enhance their reading and writing skills. The students are not only taught to write effectively, but are also disciplined to be broadly accurate in their grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Reading Comprehension (1hr/wk)
This course focuses on developing reading and analytical skills. It is recommended to those who need support in not only reading and understanding texts, but also in analysing information, improving vocabulary and making inferences.
Essay Writing (1hr/wk)
This course is suitable for students who would like to delve deeper into essay writing by going through all the necessary techniques: the use of metaphor and similes, using more advanced vocabulary etc. Students will also be taught, in depth, how to structure their essays into a clear beginning, middle and end.
With schools currently stressing the importance of literacy in the UK, we have created a course that will provide all the necessary English language skills, such as the accurate use of punctuation, strengthening grammar, and other essentials.
Year 5 Maths Introduction
The SEM Maths classes at the OxBridge Centre not only cover all the topics in the National Curriculum, but they also encourage students to stretch their abilities further by ensuring sound understanding of all taught topics. The areas which students tend to find more challenging are taught with more focus.
Level E Maths (1hr/wk)
In particular, repetitive practice in calculations is provided to encourage students who are not so quick and able in mental arithmetic to enhance their basic calculating skills. Lessons on topics which students tend to find more challenging, such as fractions, percentages and decimals, are taught over a number of weeks throughout the year to achieve perfect understanding. Short tests are given every 7 weeks to provide revision of previous topics that have been taught and to assess students’ understanding and application.
The weekly workbooks covering a variety of topics not only enhance students’ abilities to tackle different types of questions, including problem solving questions, but the materials have also been specifically designed to bring out the fun in maths. Students who were not so keen on maths will be led to enjoy maths as their favourite subject.We, at the OxBridge Centre, are confident that the students will continue to make sound progress as they take our carefully prepared SEM maths classes.
Problem Solving Advanced (1hr/wk)
Our Problem Solving workbooks focus on worded problems and the method to approaching these types of questions; this is a key element in the 11+ Stage 2 Test. Every week, there will be two or three different topics covered, ranging in difficulty. One of these topics will be focusing on the content that was covered in the SEM Maths Level E from the previous week. The workbook will have 10 pages covering the topics and 2 pages of advanced questions which are designed to further challenge our students.
There are 3 main sections:• Warm Up!
This section contains more basic questions based on their current knowledge of the topic, to prepare the students for more difficult questions.• Work Out!
This section contains questions which require more in dpeth thinking. Students are also required to show their working out.• Cool Down!
This section will provide students a break by providing simpler questions than in 'Work Out!', yet still more challnging than the 'Warm Up!' questions.* Tips are given in certain questions, which consist of a formula or a step to help answer the question.
Problem Solving Intermediate (1hr/wk)
The numeracy workbooks are designed to help students with their calculation skills. Each book is divided into different sections: The first section (2pages) consists of topics that students have covered previously in the SEM Maths Level E to review their understanding.
The main section is divided into 3 stages:• Ready
This will contain arithmetic sums, in particular, finding missing numbers in different calculations.• Steady
This will contain questions similar to the 11+ Stage 1 Test; it will be more difficult than the questions in 'Ready'.• Go!
This will contain a few challenging questions, which are usually at the end of the 11+ Stage 1 and 2 Tests.* The last few pages consist of different questions that students can work through as consolidation and to help them improve their calculation skills.
VR & NVR
What are Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning Tests ?
Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests are used in the secondary school selection process. Reasoning skills are a form of critical thinking and the tests are aimed to assess a child’s ability with words, numbers, shapes and space. Whilst it is important that these skills should be developed and practised, they are not curriculum-based, so aren’t compulsory in school education.VR (1hr30mins/wk)
This course is designed to help children improve their abilities to understand and reason using vocabulary, During the course, students will be taught how to evaluate text, how to solve work problems, how to follow written instructions to come up with a solution, how to spot letter sequences and how to crack letter and number based codes.NVR (30mins/wk)
Non-verbal reasoning is not dependant on the English language; the questions use drawings, shapes and symbols as well as mathematical concepts, such as symmetry rotation, direction and shapes.
This course is specially designed to enhance students’ critical thinking and logic to solve problems as well as improve mathematical capabilities. OxBridge Centre's own NVR materials have been developed to be based around mathematical concepts – symmetry, rotation, mirroring, shape, size and directions. We also encourage pupils to get a full grasp of the different concepts through repetition and variation of mathematical practices.
