English
  • 1 hour
  • This course has been designed to develop our students’ understanding of literary techniques and their applications both in writing and reading comprehension. These skills are the core focus of the second stage of 11+ entrance examinations and are often tough to prepare for, so we highly recommend starting early. Tutors will guide students through the analysis of a variety of texts, helping them to identify how writers use language for effect. Students will then be encouraged to apply the features and techniques they identify to their own writing.
  • During this course, students will develop their ability to:
    • Interpret and analyse texts efficiently by ‘reading between the lines’ for deeper meaning.
    • Improve the quality of their writing through improved sentence structure, figurative language, language skills and wider vocabulary use.
    • Gain confidence and knowledge in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
    • Read and write fluently and confidently.

This approach is specially designed to prepare our students for preparation for 11+ examinations.
  • During this course, students will develop their ability to:
    • Reason mathematically and apply their knowledge to challenging problem solving questions.
    • Answer increasingly complex arithmetic questions quickly and accurately.
    • Explain their thinking, including by writing down their workings out clearly.

Dates and Times

This course runs from 1st to 5th April, Monday to Friday. Each day, classes will run between 9am and 11:15am. Each subject that you select will run for 60 minutes per day, with a short break in between the classes.

Your timetable will be bespoke to you, as it is entirely dependent on your chosen subjects and availability, and will be confirmed to you by 22nd March.

Homework and Marking

Students will be given a daily homework task for each subject which must be uploaded before 9am the day after it has been set.

The day after submission, homework booklets will be marked and returned to you with comments from the tutor, providing feedback on your student’s progress and outlining key areas for them to focus further on.

Mark schemes will also be made available for you to view on the online portal at your own convenience, allowing you to review and mark any work completed in class. These will remain available for viewing throughout the rest of the academic year to assist in preparation for 11+ examinations.
