Our February Half-Term Year 5 Course offers the perfect boost in our students’ progress and confidence during their 11+ examination preparation.

The purpose of this course is to revise topics that our students have learnt in previous academic years with a particular focus on introducing how to apply this knowledge in an examination setting to achieve top marks.

Year 5 Essay Writing booklet thumbnail

Essay Writing
  • 1 hour
  • This course seeks to develop style and substance in students’ purposive writing and their analysis of different texts. Students will be taught the best approach to exam-style reading comprehension questions, a key examinable skill in the 11+ examinations, along with different creative writing tasks designed to stretch and challenge them.
  • By the end of the course, our students will have covered:
    • Interpretation and analysis of quality texts of various genres.
    • Evaluation of language use and the effect of word choice on narrative and reader.
    • Articulating answers to 11+ style reading comprehension questions.
    • Ways to approach writing different genres.
    • Improve the quality of their writing through improved sentence structure, figurative language, language skills and wider vocabulary use.

Literacy
  • 1 hour
  • The focus of this course is to extend our students’ vocabulary and improve their spelling, grammar and punctuation (SPAG). This is crucial foundational knowledge which, when applied with confidence and accuracy, leads to top marks in any written task.
  • During this course, students will develop their ability to:
    • Evaluate and learn language patterns and irregular forms.
    • Identify and correct errors in transcription and their own work.
    • Write with range and accuracy, using complex sentence structures, advanced punctuation, and sophisticated vocabulary.

Maths
  • 1 hour
  • This course focuses on reinforcing and extending the core knowledge which forms the foundation of Maths exam technique. In particular, students will learn how to apply their understanding flexibly and effectively to a variety of problem solving questions, a skill which is crucial for success in the 11+.
  • During this course, students will develop their ability to:
    • Confidently approach questions on a range of key examinable topics, including number functions and operations, multiplication, division, area, perimeter, angles, basic algebra and many more!
    • Apply their knowledge to challenging worded problem solving questions.
    • Refine their exam technique and learn effective approaches to answering even the most difficult questions.
    • Present their working out clearly and explain their mathematical reasoning.

VR & NVR
  • 2 hours
  • This course aims to hone our students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These skills form the foundation of many of the other subjects that we teach at OxBridge Centre, such as Maths and Literacy. They are highly valuable in preparation for the 11+ examinations, which require students to demonstrate advanced logical reasoning skills.
  • During this course, students will develop their ability to:
    • Confidently approach a wide range of question types used in 11+ examinations.
    • Recognise and apply patterns in a variety of different scenarios.
    • Utilise an extensive vocabulary and accurate spelling.

Dates and Times

This course runs from 17th to 21st Febuary, Monday to Friday. Each day, classes will run between 9am and 2.45pm. Each subject that you select will run for 60 minutes per day (except VR&NVR being 120 minutes), with a short break after each class.

Your timetable will be bespoke to you, as it is entirely dependent on your chosen subjects and availability, and will be confirmed to you by 7th February 2025.

Homework and Marking

Students will be given a daily homework booklet for each subject which they will be required to bring into the centre the day after the task has been set.

The day after submission, homework booklets will be marked and returned to you with comments from the tutor, providing feedback on your student’s progress and outlining key areas for them to focus further on.

In case you would like to review any of the work with your child after the course itself, markschemes will also be made accessible until the end of the year.

Discount

5% discount is applied for 3 subjects combination booking.

10% discount is applied for booking all 4 subjects.

Pricing

We will book students on to our courses on a first-come first-served basis, with 'All Subjects' bookings taking priority. All other combinations of subjects will be offered a place depending on availability.

  • £140 per subject for the week; £280 for VR&NVR
  • £28 per hour;

  • Daily homework marking with personalised Tutor’s feedback.
  • 60 minutes of tuition per subject, per day (120 minutes for VR&NVR).

To book onto the course, we will require a minimum payment of a £100 Deposit (Non-Refundable). It is possible to pay by installments on arrangement with our Course Planning Team. All payments must be completed by 12th January 2025.
