Our Year 4 Summer Intensive Course acts as a springboard for students starting their preparations for 11+ examinations. During the course, students will develop the crucial foundational tools and approaches that they will need to succeed. This preparation will ensure that, throughout Year 5, they will be able to focus on tackling topics they find particularly challenging, applying their understanding to a range of complex questions, and developing mastery of the full range of content.

This course will be held in the quiet surroundings of our Sutton Centre, where students will have the undivided attention of our expert tutors and an exclusive space to focus in small groups on collaborative and individual study.

Through this course, students will develop an understanding of the level of rigour required to succeed in the 11+ and will establish effective approaches to examinations and revision, all while having fun in the process!

Essay Writing
  • 1 hour
  • This course sets students up for success by providing clear, memorable guidance to follow when tackling a range of formal and creative essay types. Although Essay Writing is a key element of 11+ examinations, it is not a skill taught extensively at primary school. This course provides students with invaluable insight into the requirements and characteristics of a wide variety of writing styles, giving them the confidence they need to succeed. Students will analyse how writers employ different techniques and styles, and will be encouraged to apply this knowledge to their own writing.
  • Students will develop their ability to:
    • Respond to a range of writing prompts effectively and understand the requirements of different essay types;
    • Understand and interpret the creative choices writers make through text analysis; and
    • Improve the quality of their writing through improved sentence structure, figurative language skills and wider vocabulary use.

Maths
  • 1 hour
  • This course provides students with the foundational knowledge they need to confidently begin their 11+ preparations. Each day, guided by our expert tutors, students will focus on a different key topic in depth, exploring in detail any concepts which are particularly challenging. They will be encouraged to put their understanding into practice through increasing complex problem solving questions.
  • Students will develop their ability to:
    • Answer questions on a wide range of key topics confidently;
    • Tackle complex arithmetic problems with speed and accuracy;
    • Apply their mathematical knowledge to challenging problem solving questions; and
    • Explain their thinking and write their workings out clearly and concisely.

Year 4 English Literature booklet thumbnail

English Literature
  • 1 hour
  • English Literature is aimed at fostering a love for reading, opening up Year 4 students’ minds to the wonder and joy that can be brought with books. Being an avid reader has consistently proven to be an important success factor for students taking the 11+, as readers develop a broad range of vocabulary, can utilise writing techniques, and find life experience that otherwise would be inaccessible for students of this age. We provide a challenging novel for all students to keep, at no extra cost, so that we can use it as an entry point for these open-ended lessons, to support the development of higher-order thinking, research, and creative skills.

    Through this course, we seek to go beyond the basics of reading, by encouraging students to think deeply and to analyse creatively. For this reason, we have structured this mostly aural course to be as interactive as possible, with each session providing a time to think deeply about the concepts underlying the text and articulate opinions through guided debates- all of which are skills that will stand students in good stead when it comes to the 11+, and in further studies.
  • By the end of the course, we expect that students will:
    • Have re-discovered a passion for reading;
    • Have developed an inquisitive and analytical approach to reading;
    • Be able to articulate and evidence their interpretation of the text and the creative writing techniques within the text; and
    • Enjoy the challenge and pace of the reading expectations for students taking the 11+.

Dates and Times

This course runs from 28th July to 15th August, Monday to Friday. Each student will participate for a ½ day, with the choice of either the morning (9am-12.20pm) or afternoon (12.40pm-4pm) session.

Each session will consist of three subjects daily, with 10 minute breaks between: Essay Writing, Maths and English Literature - one hour per subject per day, Mon-Fri. Every session will be carefully monitored by our staff team, tutors, and our dedicated course manager - so you can rest assured that your child will be well taken care of.

Homework and Marking

Students will be given a separate homework booklet each day for each subject, consisting of 3 pages of tasks reflecting the topics covered during the lesson. Students must submit their homework at the start of the following day. These booklets will be marked and returned to you with tutor’s comments, providing feedback on students’ progress and highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement.

In case you’d like to review any of the work with your child after the course itself, mark schemes will be made available to view on the online portal until the end of the year.
