KS3 Courses
Over the course of Key Stage 3, students will study the three core scientific disciplines—English, Maths, and Science—through a broad and engaging curriculum that builds in depth each year. Each subject is designed to develop essential skills, deepen understanding, and prepare students for the academic challenges of Key Stage 4.
Students build a solid foundation in creative and analytical writing. They learn to use descriptive and figurative language, explore plot development, and engage with poetry across time. They are introduced to persuasive writing and begin studying Shakespeare and 19th-century non-fiction. The year ends with focused revision across reading and writing tasks.
Students deepen their writing across a range of forms, including letters, diaries, articles, and reports. They study major texts such as Blood Brothers, Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm, alongside Victorian detective fiction and Gothic literature. The poetry strand expands to include war poetry, sonnets, and modern poets. Emphasis is placed on comparative analysis, symbolism, and developing a distinct narrative voice.
Students refine their analytical and evaluative writing, particularly in response to unseen texts. They explore non-fiction writing for various purposes and audiences, deepen their understanding of persuasive language, and write essays with greater depth and precision. The curriculum includes advanced narrative techniques such as structural tension, dialogue, and flashback. Students also revisit and extend their study of Shakespearean drama and thematically rich poetry in preparation for GCSE.
Students consolidate their understanding of number operations, place value, decimals, perimeter, area, volume, angles, and algebraic notation. They are introduced to ratios, proportions, basic equations, fractions, and data representation. The focus is on fluency and versatility in applying foundational skills.
Students build on Year 7 topics while moving into more complex areas such as indices, prime factorisation, algebraic manipulation, Pythagoras’ Theorem, transformations, and constructions. Probability and proportional reasoning are explored in greater depth, alongside continued practice with graphs, measures, and equations.
This is a transition year that introduces GCSE-level content. Students study surds, standard form, sequences, inequalities, and quadratic equations. They apply trigonometry, solve simultaneous equations, and explore bounds, direct and inverse proportion, and graphical interpretation. Lessons emphasise problem-solving, resilience, and clear mathematical reasoning.
Students explore the foundational topics in each scientific discipline. In Biology, they study cells, tissues, and body systems. In Chemistry, they are introduced to the particle model, chemical reactions, and states of matter. Physics topics include forces, sound, light, and basic electricity. Emphasis is placed on developing investigative skills and accurate use of scientific terminology.
Building on Year 7, students move into more advanced systems and processes. Biology topics include variation, reproduction, and natural selection. In Chemistry, students examine the Earth’s structure, the atmosphere, and the reactivity series. Physics content focuses on energy transfer, magnetism, and forces in motion. Lessons frequently include efficiency calculations, energy transfer diagrams, and comparisons between energy inputs and outputs—practical, applied knowledge that bridges conceptual learning with everyday science.
This year prepares students for the transition to GCSE content. Biology topics include transport across cells, digestion, and the circulatory and immune systems. In Chemistry, students are introduced to chemical bonding, electrolysis, and rates of reaction. Physics covers nuclear radiation, waves, electromagnetism, and advanced energy concepts. By the end of Year 9, students will have a solid grasp of key terminology, conceptual understanding, and the ability to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
