KS4 Courses

As students transition into Key Stage 4, the focus shifts towards mastering subject content and developing the analytical and exam-specific skills required for GCSE success. Building on the strong foundations laid at Key Stage 3, our KS4 curriculum in English, Maths, and Science becomes more targeted and rigorous, with an emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective revision strategies. This stage equips students not only to meet the demands of the GCSE specifications but to excel in them, laying the groundwork for future academic and career pathways.

In Year 10, students build a strong foundation in core mathematical concepts, revisiting number skills and exploring algebra, geometry, ratio, probability, and mensuration. Topics include standard form, surds, equations, straight-line graphs, trigonometry, and transformations, ensuring a thorough understanding of essential methods and formulae.

In Year 11, students consolidate and extend their knowledge through advanced algebra, vectors, graph transformations, and circle theorems. They also study data handling and probability in greater depth. The year places a strong focus on exam preparation, with structured revision and targeted practice using past papers from major exam boards.

In Year 10, students develop a strong foundation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, covering core topics such as cell biology, atomic structure, bonding, energy, and electricity. As the year progresses, they explore more advanced areas including inheritance, evolution, electrolysis, and nuclear radiation. Practical work and regular assessments support the development of key scientific skills and exam technique.

In Year 11, students extend their knowledge through advanced topics such as the nervous system, organic chemistry, and waves. With a strong emphasis on revision and exam preparation, they engage in focused study of key areas, complete structured past paper practice, and refine their approach to extended and calculation-based questions.

English

Our Years 10 & 11 English programme is carefully designed to prepare students for success in both GCSE English Language and Literature. With a strong emphasis on academic rigour, targeted skill development, and exam-readiness, the curriculum enables students to make measurable progress—whether they begin in Year 10 or join mid-course.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Warm-up tasks to engage and focus students
  • Scaffolded paragraph planning using the PEAL structure
  • Close reading and guided annotation of full texts and extracts
  • Discussion and extended writing practice, including timed essays

Each weekly lesson follows a structured format that builds critical thinking, analytical depth, and writing sophistication. Lessons focus on core exam areas such as poetry comparison, dramatic methods, narrative structure, and persuasive writing. Through close reading, guided annotation, discussion, and extended written response, students master the demands of GCSE assessment objectives with increasing independence.

Whether a student is aiming to strengthen their foundational skills or striving for the top grades, our curriculum adapts to their entry point and supports continuous progress. Every component of the course is aligned with the demands of the final exams, and students are taught how to respond with precision, clarity, and confidence under timed conditions.

Throughout the KS4 English course, students will:

  • Develop nuanced interpretations of complex themes such as power, conflict, identity, morality, and gender.
  • Refine essay writing technique using structured paragraphing and high-level vocabulary to construct analytical, well-supported arguments
  • Learn to analyse language, structure, and form across prose, poetry, and drama using sophisticated literary terminology.
  • Build a secure understanding of authorial intent, historical context, and critical perspective through guided reading and discussion.
  • Practise exam-specific tasks regularly, including unseen poetry, fiction analysis, and non-fiction comparison.
  • Gain confidence in verbal and written expression—essential for both coursework (where applicable) and final assessments.

This focused and intensive approach ensures that all students—regardless of when they join—are supported in reaching their full potential. By the end of Year 11, students will have developed the fluency, analytical sharpness, and writing precision needed to meet the highest standards, with the clear goal of achieving Grade 9 in both English Literature and English Language at GCSE.

Maths

Our Years 10 & 11 Mathematics programme is designed to deliver a comprehensive and focused preparation for the GCSE Mathematics examination. The curriculum supports students in consolidating core knowledge while steadily advancing into more complex, higher-tier material. With an emphasis on precision, resilience, and problem-solving, the course equips students with the skills and confidence to achieve at the highest level.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A short warm-up or retrieval task to review key skill
  • Clear, structured teaching of core topics across all strands
  • Practice with fluency, reasoning, and exam-style problem solving
  • A homework task to consolidate learning and support revision

Each lesson follows a consistent structure that supports conceptual understanding and exam-readiness. Students begin with a focused retrieval task or diagnostic warm-up, followed by clear, structured teaching of key topics across number, algebra, geometry, ratio, statistics, and probability. Lessons progress from scaffolded examples into independent practice, including fluency exercises, reasoning tasks, and multi-step, exam-style problems.

Whether a student is working to secure strong foundational skills or striving for top-tier performance, our curriculum adapts to their needs while maintaining high expectations. Every aspect of the programme is aligned to the structure and demands of the GCSE, with continual focus on exam performance, accuracy, and efficiency.

Throughout the KS4 Maths course, students will:

  • Build fluency in arithmetic, algebraic manipulation, equations, and number operations with accuracy and confidence.
  • Develop effective problem-solving strategies through contextual tasks, worded problems, and reverse engineering of solutions.
  • Practise mathematical reasoning by identifying patterns, forming generalisations, and evaluating the validity of results.
  • Master techniques in graphing, coordinate geometry, transformations, and trigonometric relationships.
  • Tackle challenging material and deepen their understanding of higher-tier topics, including surds, quadratic equations, inequalities, and simultaneous equations.
  • Engage in structured exam preparation through topic-specific revision, guided past paper practice, and timed assessments.

This two-year programme is designed to ensure that all students—regardless of when they join—are supported in making rapid progress and closing any gaps. Through high-impact teaching, focused practice, and a relentless emphasis on mastery, students finish Year 11 equipped with the fluency, accuracy, and problem-solving depth required to succeed in their GCSE Mathematics exam, with the clear ambition of achieving a Grade 9.
