Our Year 4 Maths course aims to establish a solid understanding of key subject areas; our Problem Solving course helps your child to apply this knowledge effectively to solve unfamiliar worded questions and scenarios.

Although our Maths course contains some introductory problem solving questions, our Problem Solving course focuses explicitly on developing this skill. This enables your child to learn essential approaches, including decoding the requirements of worded questions, developing effective methods to answering questions, and explaining their reasoning clearly. Remember: the ability to apply mathematical knowledge flexibly and fluently is a key skill assessed in 11+ examinations.

The two courses are very much linked: reading comprehension, writing skills and literacy are the three necessary pillars of English language and literature. The Literacy course is fundamental in establishing confident and accurate writing skills. Many marks are allocated to accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar in 11+ exams. This feeds into our Writing Skills and Reading Comprehension course, where these skills are employed in story and essay writing.

Core Maths

Our Year 4 Maths course aims to give your child a solid understanding of key mathematical topics, preparing them to encounter more advanced topics in Year 5.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • An arithmetic Speed Test’
  • Clear explanations and practice questions on the week’s core topic
  • Introductory problem-solving questions
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson focuses on a key area of the maths curriculum, helping your child build both confidence and depth of understanding over time. More challenging topics are revisited across several weeks to support long-term mastery.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Improve their speed and accuracy in arithmetic
  • Tackle a wide range of essential maths topics, including fractions, decimals, percentages, shapes, measurement (length, weight, money and time), statistics, and probability
  • Strengthen their problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge to a variety of question type

Problem Solving

Our Year 4 Problem Solving course helps your child put their maths knowledge into practice by tackling unfamiliar worded problems—an essential skill for building confidence and achieving success in the 11+.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Warm-up problem-solving questions
  • Challenging worded problems to stretch thinking
  • Quick questions focused on key subject knowledge
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson covers three topics of varying difficulty, encouraging your child to think flexibly and apply their knowledge in different contexts. One of the three topics will have been introduced in the previous week’s Year 4 Maths lesson, giving students enrolled in both courses the chance to deepen their understanding further.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Learn to break down and understand worded problem-solving questions
  • Develop clear, reliable strategies for tackling unfamiliar problems
  • Apply a broad range of maths knowledge to a variety of problem types
  • Present their working neatly and clearly to show their mathematical thinking

Literacy

Our Year 4 Literacy course is designed to give your child a strong command of spelling, punctuation, and grammar—laying the foundations for confident reading and writing as part of their 11+ preparation.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A spelling test with 15 carefully chosen, advanced words
  • A short comprehension text to help place key literacy skills in context
  • Focused exercises in SPaG, sentence structure, and vocabulary
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson introduces a variety of core and advanced literacy skills, allowing students to revisit key areas while extending their understanding. This consistent approach helps build fluency and confidence in using the English language effectively.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Complete targeted exercises on spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, general knowledge, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning
  • Identify key information from a range of short fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Expand their vocabulary and use it with increasing accuracy and confidence

  • Explanations and exercises focused on a specific story-writing or essay technique
  • Short literacy tasks to consolidate key skills
