Year 6 Subjects

The structure of our Year 6 tuition program differs slightly from those of other year groups.

11+ Preparation: Early September to Late January

During the first half of the year, students will make the final preparations for their 11+ exams. These weekly lessons focus on developing our students’ ability to apply their knowledge to exam-style questions and tasks, as well as revising a wide range of topics to identify and address any gaps in their understanding.

Every week, students will complete a Practice Paper containing exam-style questions, which they will review during the lesson.

Get Ready for Year 7: Early February to Late July

The second half of the year focuses on preparing students for Year 7. In addition to consolidating their existing knowledge, students will explore more advanced topics, giving them confidence in their abilities as they take the next step in their education.

From January onwards, our Year 6 students take a Progress Test every 7 weeks. These Tests offer two key benefits:

  • Exam experience: These tests provide our students with the opportunity to apply their growing knowledge to challenging questions in an exam setting, under time pressure.
  • Valuable feedback: For each test, our students receive a detailed feedback report from their tutor, summarising their strengths and highlighting specific subject areas or skills to focus on in the future.

Maths

Our Year 6 Maths course prepares your child with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in the 11+ exams and transition smoothly into Year 7.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A timed Practice Paper
  • Core topic exercises
  • Challenging problem-solving tasks
  • A structured homework task

In the final lead-up to their exams, students revise key topics and refine their exam technique. Each lesson begins with a 20-minute Practice Paper, giving students the chance to work under timed conditions and identify areas for review.

Lessons focus on one core topic each week, with more complex areas taught across multiple sessions to ensure deep understanding. Students will also practise applying their knowledge to multi-step problem-solving tasks—essential for second-round 11+ assessments.

During the first half of the year, your child will:

  • Tackle a full range of topics, including Fractions, Decimals, Measure, Ratio, Algebra, Shape, Speed, and Time
  • Solve complex worded problems using efficient strategies
  • Present clear mathematical reasoning and structured working

English

Our Year 6 English course supports your child in developing the reading and writing skills needed for success in the 11+ exams—and beyond.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A reading comprehension text with written response questions
  • A range of literacy exercises
  • A structured homework task

In the lead-up to the exams, students revise and refine the full range of English skills assessed: reading comprehension, literacy, and creative or essay writing. Each lesson begins with a comprehension task, where students read a text and answer exam-style questions that develop their ability to retrieve information, justify opinions, and analyse the writer’s craft.

The second half of each lesson focuses on advanced literacy skills including grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and vocabulary—tools that directly support their extended writing, which is completed as homework.

During the first half of the year, your child will:

  • Understand, interpret, and analyse a range of texts
  • Make inferences and support answers with quotations
  • Use the Point–Quotation–Development structure in extended answers
  • Demonstrate a rich and accurate vocabulary
  • Plan and organise writing effectively
  • Use figurative language and sensory detail with purpose
  • Apply complex spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules confidently

VR & NVR

Our Year 6 Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning course builds essential problem-solving and critical thinking skills for grammar and independent school entrance exams. As these subjects are not part of the school curriculum, our lessons help students develop confidence tackling unfamiliar question types.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Two focused booklets (one for Verbal, one for Non-Verbal Reasoning)
  • Targeted questions on the week’s topics
  • A structured homework task

Lessons run for two hours each week—one hour for Verbal Reasoning and one for Non-Verbal. In Verbal Reasoning, students learn to solve word problems, follow written instructions and crack codes. In Non-Verbal Reasoning, they apply mathematical concepts such as symmetry, rotation, and direction to solve visual puzzles and sequences.

Throughout the year, your child will:

• Practice strategies for a wide variety of reasoning questions
• Strengthen vocabulary, logic, and spatial awareness
• Build exam confidence through weekly practice tests

Respond confidently to topics including:

  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: Symmetry, Rotation, Shape Sequences, Codes, Matrices, and Analogies
  • Verbal Reasoning: Word Problems, Letter Sequences, Code Cracking, and Vocabulary

Maths

From January onwards, our Year 6 Maths course focuses on giving your child a strong head start for secondary school.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Clear explanations and exercises on the week’s topic
  • Advanced problem-solving questions
  • A structured homework task

Each week introduces a key topic, extending your child’s understanding of core concepts while also introducing more advanced material they’ll encounter in Year 7. Students are guided to apply their knowledge through increasingly complex problem-solving questions, building confidence and fluency.

During the second half of the year, your child will:

  • Explore more advanced topics including Algebra and Solving Equations, Circles, Ratio and Proportion, and Angles
  • Apply their learning to a variety of challenging scenarios
  • Solve advanced problem-solving questions and clearly explain their reasoning

English

From January onwards, our Year 6 English course focuses on building the skills your child will need for success in secondary school.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A vocabulary test with 10 advanced words
  • Clear explanations and model answers
  • A range of writing tasks
  • A structured homework task

Each week, students refine their writing and analytical skills in preparation for the longer, essay-style responses they’ll encounter in Year 7. The course covers both persuasive and discursive writing, as well as more advanced approaches to literature analysis.

During the second half of the year, your child will:

  • Confidently analyse a wide range of texts
  • Explore the writer’s craft, including language and structure
  • Make comparisons within and across texts
  • Present a viewpoint in persuasive and discursive essays
  • Use essay structure effectively and apply rhetorical devices
  • Write clearly and purposefully, with the audience and task in mind
