Our Year 4 Maths course aims to establish a solid understanding of key subject areas; our Problem Solving course helps your child to apply this knowledge effectively to solve unfamiliar worded questions and scenarios.

Although our Maths course contains some introductory problem solving questions, our Problem Solving course focuses explicitly on developing this skill. This enables your child to learn essential approaches, including decoding the requirements of worded questions, developing effective methods to answering questions, and explaining their reasoning clearly. Remember: the ability to apply mathematical knowledge flexibly and fluently is a key skill assessed in 11+ examinations.

Core Maths

Our Year 5 Maths course is designed to strengthen your child’s understanding of key mathematical concepts while preparing them for success in the 11+ exams.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • An arithmetic Speed Test
  • Clear explanations and practice questions on the week’s topic
  • Short-form problem-solving questions to encourage flexible thinking
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson focuses on a core topic, giving students the opportunity to explore key subject areas in depth. By drawing on their existing knowledge, they’ll begin to access more advanced elements of each topic, gaining confidence and flexibility in how they apply their learning. By the end of the year, students will have developed a well-rounded understanding of all major areas of the 11+ Maths syllabus and feel equipped to tackle a wide range of question types with clarity and skill.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Improve their speed and accuracy when answering arithmetic questions
  • Confidently solve questions across key examinable topics, including Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Measurement (Weight, Length, Money, and Time); Shape (Perimeter, Area and Volume); Ratio and Proportion; and Algebra
  • Apply their knowledge across a variety of problem types, developing strong reasoning and exam technique

Problem Solving

Our Year 5 Problem Solving course is designed to help your child apply their mathematical knowledge with confidence and flexibility—essential preparation for the most challenging elements of the 11+ exams.

This course focuses on developing your child’s ability to approach unfamiliar, worded, and multi-step problems. These skills are particularly important for the second stage of 11+ assessments, where students are required not only to know the maths, but to apply it in complex, often unfamiliar scenarios.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Warm-up problem-solving questions
  • Advanced, multi-step problems to stretch their thinking
  • Targeted questions exploring key subject areas
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson introduces Problem Solving questions through three key topics. By exploring multiple topics in a single lesson, students learn to transfer their knowledge across different types of problems. One of these topics will link back to the previous week’s Year 5 Maths lesson, allowing students enrolled in both courses to deepen their understanding further.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Learn how to break down and understand complex, worded problems
  • Practise clear, structured strategies for approaching unfamiliar questions
  • Apply a wide range of maths knowledge to real-world problem-solving scenarios
  • Present their working clearly and logically to communicate their reasoning

Creative and Essay Writing

Our Year 5 Creative and Essay Writing course equips your child to write with confidence, clarity, and imagination—essential for success in the 11+ exams. Students learn to respond to a wide range of prompts with well-structured, engaging fiction and non-fiction writing.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Clear explanations of a key writing technique
  • Structured writing exercises
  • A targeted homework task

Each lesson focuses on a specific element of story or essay writing. Through example texts, clear explanations, and guided discussions, students learn how to plan and write effectively. A large part of each session is dedicated to writing, with individual support and feedback from tutors throughout.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Accurately apply spelling, grammar, and punctuation in their writing
  • Structure their work correctly for both narrative and essay formats
  • Use a range of language techniques and structural features
  • Express ideas clearly and coherently
  • Write in a way that engages the reader
  • Confidently use ambitious and appropriate vocabulary

Reading Comprehension

Our Year 5 Reading Comprehension course helps your child develop the skills needed to understand, analyse, and respond to a wide range of texts—an essential part of 11+ exams for both grammar and independent schools.

 Each week’s booklet contains:

  • One or two comprehension texts with a variety of questions
  • Short literacy tasks to build core reading and writing skills
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson focuses on comprehension techniques through a variety of short and extended questions. Over the year, students will explore texts from different genres, styles, and time periods, helping them become fluent, thoughtful readers.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Read and understand complex fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Accurately retrieve information and support answers with quotations
  • Summarise key ideas, make inferences, and identify language and structural features
  • Use a clear Point-Quotation-Development structure for extended answers

Literacy

Our Year 5 Literacy course develops the advanced language skills your child needs for 11+ success. It builds on their foundations in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, helping them read confidently and write with precision.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • A vocabulary test with 20 carefully selected advanced words
  • Targeted exercises in spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary
  • A structured homework task

Each lesson introduces key literacy concepts through clear explanations, followed by targeted practice. Students apply their learning across a variety of tasks including multiple-choice, gap-fill, matching, and written response questions—encouraging both accuracy and independence.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Confidently explain and apply advanced grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules
  • Complete a range of structured exercises covering core literacy and verbal reasoning skills
  • Strengthen their vocabulary and word reasoning through focused tasks
  • Retain and apply a broad vocabulary with increasing fluency

VR & NVR

Our Year 5 Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning course builds your child’s logical thinking and problem-solving abilities—essential for success in many private and independent school entrance exams.

As this subject is not part of the national curriculum, most students will not have encountered these question types at school. With expert guidance, our students develop the skills and strategies needed to approach these tests with confidence.

Each week’s booklet contains:

  • Two focused booklets (one for Verbal, one for Non-Verbal Reasoning)
  • Targeted questions on the week’s topics
  • A structured homework task

Lessons are structured across two hours each weekone hour for Verbal Reasoning and one for Non-Verbal Reasoning. In Verbal Reasoning, students explore a broad range of topics to build flexibility and speed. In Non-Verbal Reasoning, they focus more deeply on specific question types, developing a thorough understanding of the logic and methods required.

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Apply effective strategies across a wide variety of reasoning question types
  • Analyse complex diagrams, codes, sequences, puzzles, and patterns
  • Use spatial reasoning and mathematical concepts such as direction, symmetry, and rotation
  • Strengthen vocabulary and spelling accuracy
  • Respond confidently to topics including:
    • Non-Verbal Reasoning: Matrices, Analogies, Sequences, Codes, Odd One Out, Similarities, Shape Manipulation, Nets, and Cubes
    • Verbal Reasoning: A wide range of word- and logic-based question types
